Overview
Modified MiniTec linear bearing slides are
employeed in this two belt-driven scanning system, designed
and built by LG Motion, working together with AEA Technology
and BNFL Ltd. These eleven metre long scanning tables allow
misplaced or ‘rogue’ Mixed Oxide (MOX) pellets to be
detected in nuclear fuel rods before installation into a
Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) reactor core. Each table
accommodates eight MiniTec linear bearing slides equipped
with ball bearings, each revolving about a vertical axis and
running against precision ground guide rails. Linear
translation is via a DS series servo motor and belt drive,
controlled through Parker DS140 Drive and X150 Controller.
This traverses individual MOX fuel rods through a high
energy X-ray detector head. |
