Encoders

An encoder is a measurement device which converts mechanical motion into electronic signals. The encoder generally consists of a glass or metal wheel/scale with clear and opaque stripes that are detected by optical sensors to produce the digital outputs.

A rotary encoder outputs digital pulses which correspond to incremental angular motion, whereas a linear encoder output corresponds to linear distance travelled.
